Abstract
761,125. Driving-gearing; power plant. FELL DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd. Dec. 2, 1953 [Dec. 19, 1952], No. 32256/52. Addition to 628,448. Class 7 (2). Compression-ignition engines at A, B, each supercharged and governed as described in Specification 679,576, power via variable filling fluid coupling impeller-runner .pairs 4a, 17a and 4a, 18a (or equivalent centrifugal or magnetic clutches or constantly filled fluid couplings combined with clutches) members, such as co-axial shafts and sleeves 6a, 7a, rigid with the sun wheels of primary differentials the planet carriers 15a, 15b of which drive, e.g. directly and via bevel-gearing 27, 25, 24 respectively, the sun wheels 21, 23 of a secondary differential the planet carrier 30 of which transmits drive to an output shaft 26 as via reversing bevels 32, 33 alternatively clutchable thereto by sliding dogs 34, 35, oneway detents 13a preventing reverse rotation of the sleeve-borne sun wheels, and one-way detents 14a, which may be releasable as indicated in Specification 636,808, reverse rotation of the planet carriers, of the primary differentials. Each detent 14a may act directly on its respective carrier or on one of the wheels 21, 23 which is geared thereto. In operation, one engine, e.g. the engine at A, is started and the impeller-runner pair 4a, 17a alone filled giving a four-to-one reduction drive to the planet carrier 30. The engine at B is then additionally started and its corresponding impeller-runner pair filled to give a two-toone reduction drive, and finally the remaining impeller-runner pairs are filled giving a oneto-one drive. The power unit according to the invention is especially applicable to driving locomotives and two such units may be mounted on a single locomotive. According to the Provisional Specification, the engines A, B may be any prime movers, e.g. two-stroke compression-ignition engines or compressionignition engines supercharged by an exhaustturbine-driven compressor or normally aspirated, which are suitably governed e.g. as described in Specification 661,280.
