Abstract
The invention comprises N-arylazo-sultams of the formula <FORM:0760632/IV(b)/1> where X is hydrogen or methyl and R is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon residue of 3-4 carbon atoms. These are made by reacting a benzene or toluene diazonium salt (e.g. chloride or sulphate) with the appropriate sultam, preferably in the presence of one equivalent of alkali metal hydroxide per equivalent of sultam. The diazo solution is preferably 0.3-0.6 molar and the alkaline sultam solution 2-4 molar, the former being used in 5-25 per cent excess over theoretical. Examples are given of the production of N-benzene - azo - a - methyl - g - propane sultam and N - (p - toluene - azo) - a - methyl - g - propane sultam. The starting materials are obtained by cyclizing alkanesulphonic acid derivatives, e.g. (1) amino-alkanesulphonyl chlorides with alkalis; (2) chloro-alkanesulphonamides by heating; or (3) oxyalkanesulphonic acids with ammonia. g -Propane sultam and g -butane sultam are mentioned as suitable starting materials. Mixtures of isomers may be obtained and converted into corresponding mixtures of N-arylazo-sultams.
