Abstract

A coating composition for medicaments (see Group VI) comprises a film-forming substance having uniformly dispersed therein a finely-divided mineral solid which is inert to the film-forming substance and which is present in amount sufficient to prevent the film from cracking and crazing upon ageing, i.e. 10-150 per cent by weight based on the weight of the film-forming substance. The film-forming substance may be a dicarboxylic acid ester of cellulose containing free carboxyl groups such as cellulose acetate phthalate and cellulose propionate phthalate, or a cellulose ether. Specified mineral solids include talc, fuller's earth, diatomaceous earth, calamine, bentonite, pumice and insoluble sodium metaphosphate. Plasticizers, such as propylene glycol, triacetin, tripropionin, ethyl acid adipate and butyl acid phthalate, and edible surface-active agents, such as lecithin and sorbitan monooleate, may also be present. In an example erythromycin tablets are coated with a composition comprising cellulose acetate phthalate. talc, anhydrous alcohol, anhydrous acetone, propylene glycol and sorbitan monooleate, Specification 526,276,[Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:An enteric coating composition comprises an enteric film-forming substance having uniformly dispersed therein a finely divided mineral solid which is inert to the film-forming substance and which is present in an amount sufficient to prevent the film from cracking and crazing upon ageing, i.e. 10-150 per cent by weight based on the weight of the film-forming substance. The film-forming substance may be a dicarboxylic acid ester of cellulose containing free carboxyl groups such as cellulose acetate phthalate and cellulose propionate phthalate, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinylphthalate, a cellulose ether, a copolymer of an aliphatic dibasic unsaturated acid and a vinyl compound, shellac, zein, balsam tolu or a higher fatty acid. Specified mineral solids include talc, fuller's earth, diatomaceous earth, calamine, bentonite, pumice and insoluble sodium metaphosphate. Plasticizers, such as propylene glycol, triacetin, tripropionin, ethyl acid adipate and butyl acid phthalate and edible surface active agents such as lecithin and sorbitan monooleate may also be present. Medicaments which may be coated include antibiotics such as erythromycin, ammonium chloride, sodium salicylate, diethylstilboestrol, gentian violet, barbiturates; anti-epileptics, acriflavine and ferrous sulphate. These materials may be coated by known methods. In an example erythromycin tablets are coated with a composition comprising cellulose acetate phthalate, talc, anhydrous alcohol anhydrous acetone, propylene glycol and sorbitan mono-oleate. Specification 526,276 is referred to.
