Abstract

Aqueous compositions useful as shampoos contain an anionic sulphated or sulphonated detergent and minor proportions of behenic acid and of a hydrogenated castor oil having a melting point of at least 180 DEG F. Specified sulphated or sulphonated detergents are (1) sulphuric acid esters of polyhydric alcohols incompletely esterified with higher fatty acids, e.g. coconut oil monoglyceride monosulphate or tallow diglyceride monosulphate, (2) higher alkyl sulphates, e.g. lauryl or cetyl sulphate, (3) higher fatty acid esters of aliphatic hydrooxysulphonic acids, e.g. of 2:3-dihydroxypropane sulphonic acid, (4) higher fatty acid amides of aliphatic aminosulphonic acids, e.g. lauric acid tauride, and (5) alkylaryl sulphonic acids in which the aryl group may be derived from benzene, toluene, xylene, phenol, cresols or naphthalene and the adkyl radical may contain 822 carbon atoms; such compounds may be used as alkali or alkaline-earth metal salts. The compositions may also contain (1) a primary, secondary or tertiary alkylamine or alkylolamine having up to 4 carbon atoms per radical, e.g. mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine or -isopropanolamine, and (2) a weakly ionized acid, e.g. citric, tartaric, succinic, benzoic or phosphoric acid, in sufficient proportion to establish a pH value of 5-7.5. Other optional additions are (1) a hair-conditioner or superfatting material, e.g. lanoline, a fatty alcohol such as myristyl, cetyl or stearyl alcohol, a fatty amide such as myristamide, palmitylamide, stearylamide, palmitylethanolamide or myristylpropanolamide, or a fatty acid, (2) glycerine, (3) a preservative such as sodium benzoate or methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and (4) a mucilaginous material, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose or tragacanth. A perfume, a colouring material or a whitening agent may also be added.
