Abstract

759,956. Gelatinous blasting explosives. HERCULES POWDER CO. April 26,1954 [Oct. 26, 1953], No. 12057/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 9(2) Gelatinous blasting explosives comprise an explosive oil containing a liquid explosive nitric ester, an amount of hydrogenated terphenyl not substantially in excess of the amount miscible with the explosive oil, and an amount of nitrocellulose sufficient to form a gel with the explosive oil and hydrogenated terphenyl. The hydrogenated terphenyl may be added as desensitizing plasticizer to gelatin dynamites or semigelatin dynamites comprising 50-80 per cent oxidizing salts, e.g. ammonium, sodium, or potassium nitrates, or sodium chlorate or perchlorate, 1-12 per cent carbonaceous substances, e.g. meals, pulps or starch, and 0.3-1 per cent antacid, e.g. chalk, as so-called dope ingredients. The dope ingredients in semigelatins may total 5-85 per cent. Sulphur may be included as additional fuel. The nitric ester in amount 10-40 per cent may be any nitrated polyhydric alcohol, e.g. nitroglycerin. tetranitrodiglycerin, ethylene glycol dinitrate, or mixtures 5-30 per cent aromatic nitrocompound may be added as desensitizer to the nitric ester, e.g. mono-, di-. or tri-nitrotoluene, or nitro-phenol, - naphthalene, -benzene, or -xylene. The amounts of hydrogenated terphenyl and nitrocellulose may be 0.1-5 per cent and 0.2-2 per cent respectively. In examples semigelatin dynamites are disclosed containing: nitroglycerin/ethylene glycol dinitrate 20/80. 70/30, and 30/70, dinitrotoluene/orthonitrotoluene 66/34, ammonium and sodium nitrates, in admixture with hydrogenated terphenyl, nitrocellulose, starch, wood pulp, and chalk. The compositions are preparedby forming' an initial gel of the nitric ester, aromatic nitrocompound, and hydrogenated terphenyl with nitrocellulose and mixing the gel with the remaining dope ingredients. The ammonium nitrate is coated with 80/ 20 rosin/paraffin, of size Œ10 per cent held on 40 mesh screen, and at least 25 per cent pass 100 mesh, and of density 1.06 g./cc.
