Abstract

A fermentation medium for use in the production of Cephalosporin-N, or mixtures of Cephalosporin-N and Cephalosporin-P, from a Cephalosporin-producing-mould of the species of which Cephalosporium I.M.I. 49137 is a member, comprises a nutritional substrate for said mould in admixture with an active proportion (defined) of d-methionine. Racemic d-l-methionine may also be used, the quantity required being twice that of the d-isomer alone. For Cephalosporin-N and a corn steep liquor, sucrose, ammonium acetate medium, the optimum concentration of d-methionine is 0.025 to 0.05 per cent by weight of the medium. The d-methionine requirement of the mould varies with the medium. The preferred medium is that disclosed in co-pending Specification 745,208. Normally minimum requirements are a source of nitrogen and a source of carbohydrate. It is preferred that the medium contains a source of organic nitrogen, e.g. fish meal, meat meal, casein, bouillon powder, dried autolysed yeast, malt extract, urea, soya bean meal, corn meal and corn steep liquor. Media containing d-methionine are less effective in the production of increasing yields of Cephalosporin-P than in the case of Cephalosporin-N.
