Abstract
759,413. Making compound plates; welding by pressure; jointing by rolling. LUKENS STEEL CO. May 3, 1954 [May 7, 1953], No. 12790/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of cladding steel with titanium, steel backing plates 5, Fig. 2, formed into hermetically-sealed packs with sheets 11 of titanium having electro-plated deposits of iron or nickel in contact with the steel and the packs are heated while inert gas is pumped through and are finally reduced as by rolling to bond the sheets. The pack is formed with a cover plate 6 of steel, a parting compound 10 such as a dried acqueous suspension of graphite being provided between the cover-plate 6 and the titanium 11. Spacer bars 7 are welded around the edges as at 15 to seal the pack and pipe connections for inert gas such as argon are provided at grooves 14 in the spacer bars 7. The packs are flushed with argon and heated in the range between 1000‹ and 1550‹ F. for approximately one hour per inch of thickness while the flow of gas is maintained. After heating the packs are rolled, pressed or forged to effect a reduction of not less than 20 per cent on the original thickness. In a modification a pack may be formed with two backing plates and enclosing two sheets of titanium placed back to back with an intermediate layer of parting compound.
