Abstract

Hydrosilicate xerogels are prepared by precipitating an alkali metal silicate solution or suspension with a solution or suspension of a salt of an alkaline earth metal and/or magnesium in the presence of a salt of manganese, zinc, or copper, or a mixture of salts of two or more of the lastmentioned three metals, and wherein the salt of manganese may contain manganese in the anion, the proportion of manganese, zinc, and copper salts not exceeding 33 per cent of the total metal compounds present in the reaction mixture, and drying the product at below 50 DEG C. without separating the precipitate from the reaction mixture. The examples describe the preparation of various products containing alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and/or magnesium, and manganese, zinc, and/or copper hydrosiliates from reaction mixtures containing some of the following salts; sodium and potassium silicates, magnesium, manganese and zinc, carbonates, sulphates and chlorides, potassium, permanganate, calcium sulphate and copper sulphate and chloride. Some of the exemplified reaction mixtures also include boric acid, silica, river sand, kaolin, bentonite and magnesium, manganese and zinc powders.ALSO:Hydrosilicate xerogels having fertilizing and soil-improving properties are prepared by precipitating an alkali metal silicate solution or suspension with a solution or suspension of a salt of an alkaline earth metal and/or magnesium in the presence of a salt of manganese, zinc, or copper, or a mixture of salts of two or more of the last-mentioned three metals, and wherein the salt of manganese may contain manganese in the anion, the proportion of manganese, zinc, and copper salts not exceeding 33 per cent of the total metal compounds present in the reaction mixture, and drying the product at below 50 DEG C. without separating the precipitate from the reaction mixture. The dry xerogels may be mixed together or may be mixed with phytohormones, animal or human excreta, e.g. urine, black or white peat, sea mud, clay or fine sand containing marl, dolomitic marl, loess loam, basic slag, or magnesium or calcium carbonates.
