Abstract
D 2-Oxazoline is prepared by a process comprising heating N-(2-hydroxyethyl)formamide at elevated temperature and reduced pressure in the presence of a dehydrating agent and removing the water of reaction from the products of the heating. The reaction is represented by the following equation: <FORM:0758972/IV(a)/1> The D 2-oxazoline may be recovered by extraction with a suitable solvent, e.g. chloroform or carbon tetrachloride. The dehydration of the N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-formamide to D 2-oxazoline is sometimes accompanied by decomposition to monoethanolamine and carbon monoxide; the monoethanolamine so formed may be used to prepare N-(-hydroxyethyl)formamide. In the examples, D 2oxazoline is obtained by heating N-(2-hydroxyethyl) formamide at reduced pressure in the presence of (a) aluminium oxide; (b) Super "Filtrol" (Registered Trade Mark), and (c) sulphuric acid.
