Abstract
758,563. Blasting cartridges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1955 [April 30, 1954], No. 12562/54. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) A fluid-pressure blasting device comprising a tensile steel tube 1 containing a gasproducing charge and having a firing head 19 is provided with a venting head 4 having a cutting edge 5 against which rests a rupturable member 10 sealing the charge chamber from the venting head. The joint between the head 4 and the tube 1 is made gas-tight by a gasket 8. A fireproofed cardboard cylinder 9 closed by the tapered member 10 contains a charge 11 comprising a mixture of ammonium nitrate, magnesium nitrate hexatydrate and wood flour and a priming charge 12, which is a mixture of guanidine nitrate and potassium persulphate. The charge 11 sustains its own decomposition only at pressures above atmospheric and the charge 12 will not ignite methane-air mixtures. An electric initiator 13 is inserted in the charge 12 and contains an antimony/permanganate composition, the casing of the initiator being of copper and remaining intact when fired. Insulated lead wires 15, 16 connect the initiator to a live terminal 17 and an earthed terminal 18 respectively. An O-ring 21, which may be of a resilient polymerized chloroprene composition, is seated in the firing head to provide a seal for the charge chamber. After firing the device, the rising pressure in the charge chamber forces the plug 10 against the cutting edge 5 to form a tight seal, the plug being adapted to rupture at a pressure of 1400 kg./cm<SP>2</SP>.
