758,023. Measuring mass How of liquids. GLOSTER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., and LONGFORD, C. G. Dec. 17, 1954 [Dec. 17, 1953], No. 35157/53. Class 69 (1). A flowmeter for indicating the mass rate of flow of a liquid has a disc biased to a position closing its inlet, the movement of which serves to indicate the rate of flow, and means for compensating for variations in density of the liquid. As shown, the disc 5 is biased to close the inlet 1 by means of a spring 6, its position being indicated at 21 by means responsive to the ratio of alternating currents in coils 17 and 17a, this ratio being dependent on the position of armature 15 secured to a rod 9 carrying the disc 5. The force with which the rod 9 resists movement of the disc 5 is derived from the pressure in a chamber 25 which is made to depend on the density of the liquid by providing a float 33 coupled to a plate 28 partially closing the outlet 27 of chamber 25, liquid being supplied to the chamber through by-pass tube 23. The effect of acceleration of the flowmeter in the direction of guide 38 is compensated by making the effective length of crank arm 31, through which the float 33 acts on plate 28, vary by attaching this arm to a sleeve 37 movable on the guide according to the acceleration effect on weight 39 attached to the sleeve; thus the effect of the acceleration on the float is neutralized. Alternative methods of biasing and mounting the disc 5, and of supplying liquid to the chamber 25, are described and illustrated.
