Abstract

757,861. Disc mills. BAUER BROS. CO. Oct. 28, 1954 [Oct. 29, 1953], No. 31219/54. Class 59. [Also in Group XXVI] In a disc mill comprising a pair of relatively rotatable grinding discs 13, 14 carrying face plates 15, 16 respectively, and in which the disc 14 is secured to a rotatable shaft 23 mounted on spaced-apart bearing supports 12 provided in a fixed housing 11, the disc 13 is connected, through an adapter 36, with a tubular sleeve 28 supported in the housing 11 and clamped thereto by means of a releasable clamping member 37. Material to be treated is supplied through an inlet 19 and the treated material passes into a chamber 18 having an outlet tube 21. The chamber 18 is formed in part by a ring 43 which is secured in position by releasable tie members 47. The shaft 23 is connected to a thrust bearing and piston assembly 49 movable in a hydraulic chamber 56. A screw post 61 defines the limit of movement of the assembly 49 in one direction. In defining the initial position of adjustment of the discs 13, 14, the post 61 is retracted out of operational position. Pressure fluid is then admitted to the right hand side of the chamber 56 to move the piston assembly 49 and shaft 23 to the left until the face plate 16 contacts the face plate 15. The post 61 is then advanced to engage a plate 53 forming part of the piston assembly 49. To set the plates 15, 16 to a desired clearance, pressure fluid is admitted to the left-hand side of the chamber 56 to move the shaft 23 and disc 14 to the right. The post 61 is then advanced by the amount of the desired clearance and locked. Pressure fluid is then admitted to the right-hand side of the chamber 56 to move the piston assembly to the left until it is stopped by the plate 53 contacting the post 61. To provide access to the discs 13, 14, the tie members 47 are released and the ring 43 slid axially to the dotted line position shown. The clamping member 37 is then released which enables the sleeve 28 to be manually rotated in either direction to bring lowermost sectors of the plate 15 into the upper half of the housing 11 for easy removal.
