Abstract
757,745. Sheathing electric cables. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and GARDINER, H. W. B. Dec. 20, 1954 [Feb. 23, 1954], No. 5313/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Corrugating ; rolling.-In a method of making overhead electric cables a bare stranded wire core is sheathed by laterally bending a metal strip and butt-welding the longitudinal seam, the tube so formed being reduced in diameter to bring it into contact with the core. The strip 3, Fig. 2a, straightened in rolls 5, 6 and edge trimmed by shears 7 is bent round the core 1 by rolls 12, 16 and seam welded by an argon or helium shielded electric-arc welding-torch 23, Fig. 2b. The diameter is reduced by a corrugating tool comprising a rotary head 30 carrying a corrugating roll 34, Fig. 3, and three backing rolls 35 while torsion rolls 25, 27 hold the work against rotation. In a modification the diameter of the sheath is reduced uniformly along its length by cylindrical rolls 36, Fig. 4, rotating on parallel axes while the work is subjected to an end thrust so that the length of the sheath is substantially unaltered during its reduction. Each roll 36 preferably has a leading tapered portion.
