Abstract
757,408. Tube couplings. HOOVER, Ltd. Nov. 18, 1954 [Dec. 4, 1953], No. 33862/53. Class 99(1). Tubular parts, one of which fits inside the other, such as an extension tube 14 and the hose connection 10 of a suction cleaner, are releasably connected by latch mechanism comprising a ring 15 carried by and surrounding the outer part and affording a shoulder shown as the edge of an aperture 18, engaging a shoulder shown as a pin 13, on the inner part 14 to prevent separation of the parts, the ring normally lying adjacent the surface of the outer part 10 in the region of the shoulder and being secured to the outer part at a point diametrically opposite the shoulders but spaced from the surface of the outer part in the regions between the shoulders and this point, movement of the ring towards the outer part in these regions causing the shoulders to be separated and permitting disengagement of the parts. As shown, the ring 15 is an oval or elliptical spring ring riveted at 21 to the connection 10 and provided with a ramp portion 17, and the pin 13 engages the ramp 17 so as to lift the upper part of the ring and allow the pin to enter the aperture 18. Release is effected by squeezing the sides of the ring, ribs 23 providing gripping surfaces and stiffening the ring ; the ribs may be replaced by resilient pads riveted to the sides of the band. In modifications (not illustrated) (a) the pin 13 is secured to the band and engages a hole or a circumferential groove in the tube 14, and (b) an open-ended slot 12 formed in the outer tube 10 to receive the pin 13 extends beyond the band 15, and the pin 13 latches against the inside edge of the band.
