Abstract

756,690. Automatic control systems. STAMICARBON N.V. Nov. 25, 1953 [Nov. 27, 1952; Nov. 10, 1953], No. 32719/53. Class 38 (4). The supply of gaseous fuel to a main heater is automatically maintained in constant proportion to that supplied to a dummy heater the temperature of which is maintained constant by automatic control of its fuel supply. In Fig. 1 gaseous fuel in a conduit 1 is supplied through valves 4a, 4b to oven burners 3a, 3b, respectively. The fuel supply pressure to each burner is automatically controlled by pressure gauges 23a, 23b controlling valves 4a, 4b through regulators 5a, 5b respectively. The gaseous fuel is also supplied through a conduit 6 to a test burner 11 and the rise in temperature of air supplied to this burner from a conduit 12 is measured by thermocouples 14, 15. This rise in temperature, which is a measure of the heat output of the test burner is arranged to control a valve 8 in conduit 6 and thereby maintain the heat output of the test burner constant. Flow of fuel through conduit 6 is then a measure of the calorific value of the gas and a flow meter 9 is arranged to control regulators 5a, 5b so that the oven fuel pressures are adjusted to maintain constant heat input to the ovens despite changes in calorific value. A liquid heat exchanger may, alternatively, be associated with the test burner to measure its heat output. In a modification valve 8 is additionally controlled in accordance with fuel flow through conduit 6.
