Abstract
Apparatus for the detection of carbon monoxide in an atmosphere comprises a pair of thermistors 4, 5 arranged in the atmosphere to be tested, an oxidizer 6 in contact with one thermistor and an inert material 45 in contact with the other <PICT:0756662/III/1> thermistor, and electrical means to indicate the difference in temperature between the thermistors. The thermistors are arranged in series in a duct 41 through which the atmosphere flows; the duct 41 is formed in a block 40 of a poor heat conductor, e.g. expanded ebonite, surrounded by a barrel 47 of copper or brass acting as a heat reservoir. The atmosphere enters at 49, passes to chamber 51 through a coil 48 soldered to the barrel 47, and thence through the duct to outlet 54. The oxidizer may be a catalyst, e.g. Hopcalite, or an oxidizing agent, e.g. silver permanganate. Air to be tested, e.g. from coal mines, may first pass through a filter to remove solid particles, then through mercuric sulphate, magnesium sulphate, and sulphuric acid impregnated on silica gel, or bromine in active charcoal, to remove unsaturated hydrocarbons, then through soda lime or soda asbestos to remove water vapour and acidic gases, and finally through anhydrous magnesium perchlorate to remove water vapour and ammonia. For testing or calibrating the apparatus, a vessel containing Hopcalite may be included to remove all the carbon monoxide. The thermistors are connected in the arms of a wheatstone bridge and the voltage obtained is amplified and used to operate a warning lamp and buzzer, and a meter showing carbon monoxide concentration (see Group XXXVIII).
