Abstract

756,335. Thread tensioning apparatus. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Sept. 28, 1954, No. 110/53. Class 120 (2). Apparatus for tensioning a thread passing from a' supply spool to a thread using device comprises a rotatable drum about which the thread is passed and an electromagnetic braking mechanism consisting of an inner stator and an outer stator coaxial therewith, an annular space being provided between said stators, the stators each having an equal number of magnetic poles, the poles of one stator being located opposite to the spaces between the poles of the other stator, a cylindrical rotor of permanently magnetic material mounted in said annular space and rotatably connected to said drum and means for energizing the stator poles, so that the poles of one stator are given opposite polarity to the poles of the other, so as to supply a torsional resistance to the rotation of said drum. In the embodiment shown the drum is connected to a cylinder 31 of permanently magnetic material having a high hysteresis loss which cylinder is rotatable by the drum in an air gap between the poles 29 of an outer stator 27 and the poles 30 of an inner stator 28. The poles 29 and 30 are of opposite polarity and arranged in slightly offset relationship so as to form a zig-zag magnetic field. There is thus a resistance to rotational movement of the cylinder 31 and hence of the drum so that a uniform tension is maintained in the thread passing around the drum. The apparatus is particularly described for use on rubber thread in the winding of golf ball cores. Stop motions operable on breakage of the thread and on the golf ball core reaching a predetermined size are incorporated. Specifications 718,371 and 721,643 are referred to.
