Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises (a) a chemical adduct of maleic anhydride and a natural rubber or a synthetic rubber derived from a conjugated diene (see Specification 739,634); and (b) a cashew nut shell oil modified phenol-aldehyde resin. Solvents such as toluene and/or butanone may be added. The proportion by weight of adduct to resin can be between 50:50 and 90:10. Specified synthetic rubbers are homopolymers of conjugated dienes, e.g. butadiene, cuprene, piperylene or 2.3-dimethylbutadiene and copolymers of conjugated dienes with styrene, methyl styrenes, an acrylic or methacrylic nitrile, amide, acid or ester, a monovinyl pyridine, a fumaric acid ester, vinylidene chloride, methyl vinyl ketone, and methylisopropenyl ketone. Suitable resins are those described in U.S. Specification 2,532,374, "Durez 12687" and "Durez 12687." The adhesives are especially useful for bonding fabrics to elastomers (see Groups V and VIII). In examples adhesives comprise (1) and (4) "Durez 12687" and an adduct of Hevea rubber and maleic anhydride dissolved in a mixture of toluene and butanone; (3) and (6) "Durez 12687" and an adduct of a butadiene: styrene copolymer and maleic anhydride dissolved either in toluene or in a mixture of toluene and butanone. (5) "Durez 12686," an adduct of Hevea rubber and maleic anhydride, an isobutylene: isoprene copolymer, carbon black, a resol derived from p-octyl phenol and formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde and toluene. (7) and (8) "Durez 12687" and an adduct of an acrylonitrile: butadiene copolymer and maleic anhydride dissolved in butanone.ALSO:Textile material (e.g. nylon, rayon or cotton), are bonded to a natural or synthetic rubber by an adhesive comprising (a) a chemical adduct of maleic anhydride and a natural rubber or synthetic rubber derived from a conjugated diene (see Specification 739,634 [Group IV(a)]) and (b) a cashew nut shell oil modified phenolaldehiyde resin. The composite articles formed may be tyres, rubber soled shoes with cloth uppers fire or garden hose, or beltings and diaphragms having a fabric reinforcement. The textile material may first be coated with long-chain quaternaty compound. Bonding may be effected to unvulcanized rubber and vulcanization then effected e.g. by heating in gaseous ammonia.
