Abstract

755,726. Automatic steering control systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 6, 1953 [March 22, 1952], No. 3461/53. Class 38 (4). In an automatic pilot for controlling a craft about two axes, the ratio of the effect of an automatic control signal on a control surface for one axis, to the effect of the same signal on the control surface for the other axis, has one or the other of two selectable values. As applied to an aircraft automatic pilot, a localizer radio receiver 11 produces a D.C. signal, dependent on horizontal deviation of the aircraft from a radio beam, which is applied to a modulator 20, of the type described in Specification 647,961, [Group XXXIX], producing a corresponding A.C. signal of varying magnitude and phasesense. This A.C. signal is applied through an amplifier 22B and limiter 75 of the type discribed in Specification 679,560 to a transformer 122, one secondary winding 124 of which supplies a signal controlling the ailerons to restore the craft to course mainly by banking, while the other secondary winding 123 supplies a signal producing some movement of the rudder during the turn. A circuit including a thermal time delay tube 52 of the type described in Specification 603,610, [Group XXXVI], introduces a rate anti-hunt component. When the aircraft is about to land, a switch 18 is operated to introduce a glide path radio receiver 10, the D.C. output of which controls the elevators through a computer 200 of the type described in Specification 675,751 to maintain the aircraft on its correct descent path. Operation of switch 18 also changes over a relay 139 from the position shown so that the signal from the localizer receiver has a greater effect on the rudder and less effect on the ailerons, thus producing flatter turns when the aircraft nears the ground.
