Abstract
755,719. Coating glass fibres with metals. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1954 [Dec. 16, 1953], No. 36333/54. Class 82(2). Glas3 fibres and glass-fibre products are coated with silver, gold, cadmium, mercury, platinum, antimony, bismuth, arsenic or lead by a process involving applying a solution of a salt of the metal and a reducing solution to give the metal. The reducing solution can comprise hydrazine sulphate, formaldehyde, sugar or glyoxal. A package of fibres 11 is treated with the metal salt and reducing agent by applicators 16, 17 respectively and passes into a washing bath 19 to be re-packaged at 21. An alternative apparatus is disclosed in which the fibres are heat cleaned at 485‹-650‹C. and heat dried after contacting roll applicators. The reduction reaction may be speeded up by heat or ultra violet light. A stannous chloride "size " may be applied before the coating steps.
