Abstract

755,123. Skate wheels. DAVIES STEEL SPECIALITIES, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1955 [Feb. 24, 1954], No. 5410/54. Class 144 (1). [Also in Group V] A ball-bearing skate wheel or castor has a rubber or plastic body or tyre 5 moulded thereon to encase the bearing housing 3, 4 circumferentially and laterally. As shown in Fig. 2, the bearing comprises an inner hub sleeve or race 1 having a radial flange 1a spacing two sets of balls (or rollers) 2, 2a housed in a split outer race member 3. The housing member 3 comprises two cup-members having butting radial flanges 3a which are clamped together.by a channel-section ring 4, or may be welded together. Alternatively the housing or outer race member may comprise a deep cup member 7, Fig. 4, capped by a flanged ring 9. In each case the rubber body or tyre 5 is moulded thereon to extend radially inwardly along the flanks of the housing member 3, a clearance 6 being left between the rubber 5 and the hub sleeve 1. Fig. 6 shows a wheel arrangement using a single set of balls 2b in an outer race member or housing 3 which may be constructed as shown or as arranged in Fig. 4.
