Abstract
755,107. Syphons. BALFOUR, BEATTY & CO., Ltd., and MACKICHAN, R. W. A. Dec. 16, 1954 [Jan. 15, 1954], No. 1296/54. Class 69(1). In syphon apparatus arranged to come into operation automatically when the water level in a reservoir, pond or tank 11 rises to a certain high level and to stop when it falls to a lower level, a mechanism is adapted to open a gate 15 through a, cable 23 at the high level to admit water to seal the throat 20 of the syphon which then primes itself, and to close the gate at the lower level thereby shutting off the water from the sealing basin 12 and admitting air to the syphon throat to stop the flow. The movement of the gate 15 may be controlled by a hollow piston moving in a cylinder and being partially filled with water overflowing from a weir; as the water level rises the rate of overflow increases to increase the weight of water in the piston and cause it to fall under the increased weight to open the gate. When the gate 15 is subsequently closed, the basin 12 empties through a drain 36.
