Abstract
755,066. Making wire coils; shearing. HELI-COIL CORPORATION. July 22, 1954 [Sept. 18, 1963], No. 21377/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Wire coils, such as screw-thread inserts, are made by continuously coiling wire advancing to coiling means, guiding the coil so formed to gripping means, spaced from the coiling means, which intermittently grip the leading end part, of the coil and allow a predetermined length to be severed therefrom. Wire 13 is fed to a continuously operating coiling machine 12, driven by an electric motor 16, and is formed thereby into a continuous coil 29 which is guided by a tube 28, slightly wider than the coil, to intermittently operated gripping and severing means 11. These comprise an upper pair of jaws 20, 21 the jaw 20 being fixed and the jaw 21 being slidable thereto and from by a slide 45 reciprocated by a cam 67 on a onerevolution shaft 50, a lower pair of jaws 22, 23, the jaw 22 being fixed on an intermittently rotated table 24 and the jaw 23 slidable thereto by the slide 45, and a cutter blade 41 secured to the slide 45 to move between the upper and lower jaws. The leading end of the coil 29 is fed down through the open jaws and after a predetermined length of wire 13 has been fed to the coiling machine 12 a switch 18 is closed to energize a solenoid 105, Fig. 4, to engage a clutch 94, bn the shaft 50, driven from the motor 16. As the cam 67 on the shaft 50 rotates, the slide 45 is pushed forward to close the upper and lower jaws, to raise, through links 59, a rod 42 within the coil, and to cause the blade 41, in co-operation with the top of the rod 42, to sever the coil. The lower jaws are held closed by a catch 70, to hold the severed coil and, on continued rotation of the shaft 50, a quadrant 91 thereon causes, through gearing 84, the table 24 to turn 60 degrees to present another pair of jaws 22, 23, opened by engagement of the catch 70 with an abutment, below the jaws 20, 21 which are then opened. The clutch 94 is then disengaged to stop the shaft 50 until the switch 18 is again closed after a predetermined length of wire 13 has been fed to the coiling machine; current to the solenoid 105 having passed during the one revolution of the shaft 50 through a contact arm 111 on the shaft and a fixed arcuate contact 113 having an insulated spot which when engaged by the arm 111 interrupts the current to the solenoid 105. The table 24 and lower jaws may be dispensed with and the severed coil allowed to drop away from the severing means. U.S.A. Specification 2,541,232 is referred to.
