Abstract
755,037. Friction clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. April 14, 1954 [June 26, 1953], No. 10984/54. Class 80(2) A double clutch on a tractor comprises one driven disc 20, driving a central shaft 12 connected through change-speed gearing to the roadwheels, and another 31 driving a sleeve-shaft 13 of a power take-off, the discs being clamped against a central plate 14 bolted to a driving flywheel 11 by presser-plates 16. 23 respectively, each controlled by three separate radial levers 40, 54, actuated by a common release collar 57, inward axial movement of which first releases only the road-wheels clutch 20 and later also the power take-off clutch 31. The levers 40, 54 fulcrum on pins 39, 52 in alternate channel-sectioned radial legs 34, 35 of a six-legged pressed cover-plate bolted to the centre-plate 14, each lever 54 being connected to its presser-plate 23 directly by a pin 55, and each lever 40 being linked to its presser-plate 16 by a strut 42. The fulcrum pins 52 of the levers 54 engage radially elongated holes in the levers to permit a rolling action. Adjusting screws 58 are provided at the actuated ends of the levers. The presser-plates 16, 23 are pressed inwardly to engage both clutches by common springs 30, Fig. 6, each compressed between an enlargement 25 of the presser-plate 23 and a cup 27 retained on a pin 24 passing freely through the plates and having a head supporting the presser-plate 16. In Figs. 10-12, not shown, each clutch is engaged by separate springs acting in compression between the cover and the levers 40, 54. The latter 54 are not pivoted to the presser-plate 23, but have curved outer ends bearing directly on axial bolts screwed in the presser-plate and carrying anti-rattle hair-pin springs bearing on the cover-plate and curved blade-springs bearing on the lever ends, both springs facilitating disengagement of the presser-plate. The thrust collar 57 may be operated by a pedal or by an overcentre hand lever to stay in the clutch released condition.
