Abstract

754,997. Belt sanding. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 26, 1954, No. 30883/54. Class 60 A platen in a belt sanding machine comprises a face plate 11, a layer of sponge rubber 12 and a base plate 14. Bolts 15 extend through apertures in the face plate, resilient layer and base plate, being free to turn or move axially therein. The heads 17 of the bolts are countersunk; each bolt carries a nut 18 between which and the base plate is positioned a spiral compression spring 19. Alternatively, studs may be fixed to the face plate and extend through apertures in the resilient layer and the base plate each stud having a head between which and the base plate a spring is positioned. In use, the base plate is fixed to the machine frame, e.g. a sleeve 25 secured to the base plate 14 is mounted on a supporting shaft 26 so that the platen supports the sanding belt 29 where it engages the work such as a sheet of glass 27 held by hand or resting on a support 28.
