Abstract

A motor fuel which is particularly suitable for use in cool moist atmospheric conditions since it prevents ice formation in carburetters comprises a hydrocarbon distillate and 0.1-1 per cent by weight of an aliphatic oxygen-containing compound having 6-21 carbon atoms in its molecule, at least two thirds of the carbon atoms being in the longest chain in the molecule, and having two secondary or tertiary carbon atoms, separated from each other by at least one carbon atom of one oxyalkylene group and removed by not more than two carbon atoms from the ends of the longest chain, each of these secondary or tertiary carbon atoms carrying a substituent group, one of which is methylol or hydroxyl and the other of which is methylol, hydroxy or, in the case of an aliphatic oxygen-containing compound exhibiting keto-enol tautomerism, carbonyl. The hydrocarbon distillate may be a gasoline, turbo-fuel or diesel fuel. A list of suitable aliphatic oxygen-containing compounds is given. The motor fuel may contain additional ingredients such as oiliness agents, gum solvents, lead alkyl antidetonants, lead-scavenging halides, dyes, gum inhibitors, anti-oxidants, rust preventives and metal deactivators. In the examples, gasoline compositions are described which contain 2-methyl-pentane-diol-1, 3, 3-oxa-5-methyl-5, 7-dimethylol-octane, 2-methyl-2-hydroxy-pentanone-4 (which is tautomeric with 2 - methyl - pentene - 3 - diol - 2, 4). 2-methyl-pentane-diol-2, 4, 6-methyl-4, 7-dioxa-decane-diol-2, 9, hexane-diol-2, 5, 4-oxaheptane-diol-2, 6, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18-pentamethyl-4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19-hexa-oxa-docosane-diol-2, 21, or 2-oxa-4-methyl-4, 6-dimethylol-heptane, and also tetra-ethyl lead and a naphthenic solvent oil according to Specification 419,690. For comparison purposes, similar gasoline compositions are described in which the aliphatic oxygencontaining compound is ethane-diol-1, 2, 3-oxa-pentane diol-1, 5, 3-6-di-oxa-octane-diol-1, 8, propane-diol-1, 2, butane-diol 1, 3 pentane-diol 1, 5, 1, 3-dimethyl-butane-diol-2, 3 or 3-methylol-4-hydroxy-heptane.
