Abstract
754,812. Preventing incrustation and corrosion. VELDE, J. C. VAN DER. Oct. 26, 1954, No. 30827/54. Class 123(1) Fouling and corrosion of ship's hulls, sheet piling &c in sea water is prevented by passing a direct current between copper anodes and the immersed structure, the toxic copper compounds formed electrolytically at the anodes flowing over the metal surfaces and preventing growth of molluscs, &c. thereon whilst the current flow provides cathodic protection for the surfaces. Preferably iron anodes with copper inlays are used. To protect stationary structures such as lightships, the anodes are secured to projecting carriers. For moving ships they are applied against the hull and insulated therefrom, the insulant enclosing the anode except for its outwardly facing surface. A visual or acoustic signal operated by the cessation of the current supply is provided and may be combined. with an arangement for switching over to another source of current so as to provide continuous protection. Specification 534,029 is referred to.
