Abstract

In a process for dewaxing hydrocarbon oils, wherein the oil is dissoved in a hydrocarbon solvent and the waxy constituents of the oil are selectively precipitated, a small quantity of ammonia, less than 2 per cent by weight based on the solvent, is added to the solvent. During the dewaxing of hydrocarbon oils, employing a hydrocarbon solvent, low temperatures are often used so that any water in the system is converted to ice. The ammonia depresses the freezing point of the water, thus preventing the formation of ice. Hydrocarbon oils mentioned are petroleum oil fractions such as paraffin distillates and waxy lubricating oils. The hydrocarbon solvent may contain 2-5 carbon atoms in the molecule, and is preferably liquid propane. Apparatus is described in which petroleum lubricating oil is mixed with a blend of liquid propane and ammonia, and the mixture is heated to secure complete miscibility, and then cooled to precipitate the wax. The wax is removed by filtration and the liquid propane and ammonia are recovered for reuse.
