Abstract

754,573. Ingot-moulds. DAUSSAN, H. J. April 28, 1954 [April 29, 1953; March 31, 1954], No. 12288/54. Class 83 (1). A fitting for the bottom of an ingot, or other mould, comprises a base which rests on the mould bottom and is provided on its upper face with at least one non-hollow projection integral with or connected to said base, which the wave of molten metal created at the start of pouring is compelled to pass round or over so as to be retarded and substantially prevented from sweeping up the mould walls. The projections may be of the same metal as the cast and formed by casting, stamping, &c., or of powder agglomerated cold or hot with or without a binder. Alternatively a combustible material such as papier mache, paper, cardboard, vegetable or animal powders or fibres, wood, hemp, jute or cellulose fibres &c. agglomerated with dextrin, wax, starch solution, molasses, tar, coal-tar pitch, bitumen &c., or a reducing, oxidizing, or exothermic slag-forming material such as asbestos and the foregoing agglomerated materials, rendered relatively incombustible by a silicate, or fluidified by an alkaline fluoride, or silica-aluminous, magnesian, siliceous or graphitic or other refractory. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the projections 4 in the form of cones or pyramids are formed on a base 3 which is embedded in the mould base 2. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the projections are individually secured to the mould base by glue or cement &c. and may be of hemispherical form. In a modification, Fig. 12, the projections are in the form of tufts of wires or rods which are of metal or synthetic resin or vegetable or animal fibres compressed or agglomerated with a fireproofing agent such as sodium silicate. The tufts may be inserted in the mould as individual elements. In a further modification, Fig. 14, the projections comprise a central projection 4h and a series of concentric annular ribs 4g, formed in sheet metal, or integral with the mould bottom. In other modifications the projections are incorporated in a device 3i, Fig. 16, which has a peripheral ridge 15, or in superimposed sheet-metal stampings, Fig. 17, comprising upstanding peripheral flanges 22-24. The stampings may be used singly. The invention may be used for bottom pouring.
