754,525. Gas manufacture. HOUILLERES DU BASSIN D'AQUITAINE, and BEAUGRAND, P. Oct. 29, 1954 [Oct. 31, 1953], No. 31285/54. Class 55(2). Fusible coals which are to be carbonized in agglomerate form have from 0À25 to 1À00 per cent by weight of free sulphur, and a binder such as bitumen or pitch mixed therewith, the mixture being given a heat treatment below the coal-softening temperature, i.e., 150‹C. The free sulphur may be added as spent iron oxide containing 30 per cent sulphur. In an example, a coal containing up to 30 per cent volatiles with a swelling index of 8 is mixed with 2 per cent spent iron-oxide, and the binder, and is pressed into ovoids which are air-heated for 6 hours up to 150‹C. Alternatively, the heating may be in a neutral atmosphere. After carbonization, 80 per cent of the added sulphur has disappeared.
