Abstract
<PICT:0754507/III/1> <PICT:0754507/III/2> Heavy residual oils are coked in a fluidized bed 24 of hot solid particles, the feed being preheated to slightly below cracking temperature and injected vertically in a number of continuous unatomized jets with a velocity above about 35 ft. per second. For obtaining motor fuels and gas oils from petroleum residue, the bed is preheated to 900 DEG -1200 DEG F. and substantially higher for olefins and aromatics. Coke is withdrawn through a stripper 17 into which steam &c. is introduced, and part at least is reheated for return through a line 13. One form of nozzle comprises a feed line 39 turned at right-angles near the outlet to project out of a wedge-shaped or tapered-end steam jacket 37. The length of the transverse portion should be at least five times the bore diameter. Another comprises a cylindrical body with an elliptical end portion centrally bored to form an extension of the feed line with a transverse bore to form the outlet. The nozzles may project the feed slant-wise or horizontally provided it is not caused to impinge on the vessel walls.
