Abstract
753,274. Magnetostrictive delay lines. ULTRA ELECTRIC, Ltd. May 13, 1954, No. 14078/54. Class 40 (8). The transmitter of a magnetostrictive delay line 1 comprises at least two coils surrounding the line, the coils being spaced apart and movable along the line. The coils 2 may be connected to each other and to a number of capacitors 3 to form an inductance-capacitance delay line connected at one end to a signal source 5 and at the other to a terminating resistance 4 or capacitance. A permanent magnet 6 may be placed adjacent the end of the line 1. The spacing of the coils and the values of the capacitances are adjusted until the times of transit of the electric and mechanicalpulses respectively in the two lines are equal. In a modification, the transmitter has two coils which are connected in series or parallel and wound in opposition to each other. The two coils respectively add to and subtract from the field produced by a permanent magnet situated adjacent the coils. This construction can also be operated as a receiver.
