Abstract

A dental pulp vitality tester has a current limiting resistance in the probe circuit. The value is so chosen that when the comparatively high resistance of a tooth is in the circuit the current cannot exceed the maximum necessary, for the desired test, viz. 50 microamperes while, when the probe is in contact with the patient's gum, thereby being effectively short-circuited, the limiting resistance keeps the current below that needed for sensation, this being approximately 200 microamperes. By this means it is impossible to obtain false indications when the probe is accidentally in contact with or is closely adjacent to the gum. The appropriate formula for deducing suitable values is given. U.S.A. Specification 2,603,753 is referred to.
