Abstract

A process for producing 8-haloxanthine salts of b -dimethylaminoethyl benzhydryl ether comprises a metathetical reaction between a solution of the neutral oxalate of b -dimethylaminoethyl benzhydryl ether and a solution of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of the 8-haloxanthine at a temperature of at least 90 DEG C. and separation of the salt thus formed. In examples the neutral oxalate of b -dimethylaminoethyl benzhydryl ether in alcoholic solution is reacted with (1) an aqueous solution of the ammonium salt of 8-bromotheophylline; (2) the sodium salt of 8-chlorotheophylline, the desired 8-haloxanthine salts crystallizing out. Potassium or lithium salts of the 8-haloxanthines can be reacted similarly.
