Abstract

The invention comprises 2-methyl-3-phytyl 1,4-naphthohydroquinone monoesters and the preparation thereof by condensing a 2-methyl-1,4 - naphthohydroquinone monoester with phytol or isophytol or with an ester or ether of either substance in the presence of an acidic condensing agent, e.g. zinc chloride, sulphuric acid, trichloroacetic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid, boron trifluoride and its complex with ether. As solvent for the reactants there may be used diisopropyl ether, diethyl ether, dibutyl ether dioxane, formic acid or acetic acid. Examples disclose the production of the monobenzoate and monoacetate of 2 - methyl - 3 - phytyl - 1,4 - naphthohydroquinone. 2 - Methyl - 1,4 - naphthohydroquinone monobenzoate is obtained by reacting 2 - methyl - 1,4 - naphthohydroquinone with benzyl chloride and pyridine in ether.
