Abstract

The invention comprises aromatic isocyanatomonocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acid chlorides in which both the isocyanato and the carboxylic chloride groups are in the aromatic part of the molecule. The compounds may be obtained by the action of phosgene on aromatic amino mono- or di-carboxylic acids or their alkaline salts. Preferably the reactants are stirred together in the presence of an inert diluent such as nitrobenzene, chlorobenzene or dichlorobenzene at 100 DEG to 250 DEG C. Examples relate to the production of 2-isocyanato-6-naphthalene carboxylic acid chloride, the compound <FORM:0752105/IV(a)/1> p - isocyanato - benzoyl chloride, 3 - isocyanato-benzoic acid chloride, 4-methyl-3-isocyanato-benzoic acid chloride, 3,5-di-(chlorocarbonyl)-phenylisocyanate and 2-methyl-5-chlorocarbonyl-phenyl-isocyanate.
