Abstract
751,775. Cofferdams. CEMENTATION CO., Ltd. March 18, 1955 [Feb. 4, 1954], No. 3324/54. Class 68(2) In a method of producing a sub-aqueous structure, such as a cofferdam, which is subject to hydrostatic uplift steel piling 3 is driven into the sea bottom consisting mainly of clay 1 to enclose a rectangular area, and extends above the surface 2 of the water, there being below the clay 1, a layer of water bearing gravel 4 subject to the full hydrostatic pressure and a stratum of rock 5. Metal tubes 6 are then driven into the bottom 1, their upper ends remaining above the level of the water 2, each tube having a boring rod extending into the rock 5. A high tensile cable 7 is threaded down each tube and grouted at 8 in the bore hole.. Concrete is then poured into the water enclosed by the piling to form a thick floor 9. After the floor has set the cables are tensioned by jacking them against the upper ends of the tubes 6 and the water within the piling is pumped out. If the concrete floor is subsequently held down by massive plant the cables may be de-tensioned. In an alternative arrangement the concrete floor is laid before the holes down to the rock are drilled.
