In a hydro-extractor comprising an opentopped rotary basket 1 which is axially reciprocated to move the separated solids upwardly over the basket wall to spill over the basket rim 15, the rim of the basket has a downwardlyprojecting annular portion 55 which co-operates with the upper part of the outer wall 50 of the water collector to prevent water coming into contact with the discharged solids. The bottom plate 6 of the basket has a rim 60, 61 which co-operates with the inner annular wall 68 of the water collector to prevent water reaching the basket drive mechanism. The basket wall comprises a plate 3 having small perforations and a plate 2 having large perforations, the wall being clamped between the basket rims by bolts 13. The frame 22 of the hydro-extractor is mounted on springs 72 over a bunker 49 for the discharged solids.- A motor 35 on the frame rotates a member 23 about a king-post 21 fixed to the frame. The basket is connected to the member by means of springs 27, 28 which permit the basket to reciprocate axially whilst rotating. The basket is reciprocated by means of a motor 37 fixed to the frame, a crank 36, and a connecting-rod 38 attached to a distributer 20 fixed to the basket base. Openings in the annular wall 64 of the protective casing of the drive mechanism are covered by rubber sheets 62, 63, the outer casing 47 being made in two parts to facilitate access to the motors.
