Abstract

751,224. Indicating speed photo-electrically. FRUNGEL, F. Jan. 6, 1954, No. 374/54. Class 40 (3). Apparatus for effecting a control at a particular velocity comprises an elongated source of modulated light at one side of a path of travel and a light actuated receiving device including a photo-cell on the other side of the travel and a relay receiving the photo-cell output pulses and activated only when the light is interrupted by a body passing through the beam at above a predetermined velocity. As shown, a relay is to be operated when a railway truck 11 passes in front of a modulated light. source at an excessive speed. The light source is a fluorescent lamp 10 a section 10a of which is viewed by a photo-electric cell situuated behind a lens and an angle limiting diaphragm 14. The pulsed output of the photocell 16 is amplified in a tube 19 and fed through an anode transformer, .the secondary of which is tuned, to a rectifier 21, which feeds a condenser 22 and resistor 23 in parallel. Provided the light reaching the cell is not interrupted a steady potential is built up across the condenser which is prevented by a blocking condenser 24 from reaching a winding of a relay 26. If a truck passes through the light beam however the potential across the condenser falls and the charge on blocking condenser 24 leaks away the resulting current through relay winding 26 operating the relay. The relay may be present to operate at a particular speed by means of a preadjusted backing off current in a differential winding. Variations in the light source intensity are compensated by means of a correcting voltage derived from the output of transformer 16, rectified at 32 and passed through a long time constant circuit to control the grid potential of tube 19. A number of photo-cells may be arranged to control a single relay if a truck passes any of them at above the predetermined speed. In the arrangement of (Fig. 4, not shown) all the blocking condensers 30 are connected through individual rectifiers to the grid of a triode with a relay winding in its anode circuit. This triode may include a number of relays in its anode circuit each of which operates at a different velocity. The light source may be situated in a parabolic reflector and is preferably of a colour widely different from that of daylight. A blue-violet fluorescent coating may be used and the photo-cell may be provided with an appropriate filter.
