Abstract
The dehydrochlorination of dichloropropionic acids, their esters, amides and nitriles with alkaline agents in presence of water to give a -chloroacrylic compounds is improved by the addition of catalytic amounts of water-soluble iodides. In examples the yield of a -chloroacrylic methyl ester by the alkaline dehydro-chlorination of a ,b -dichloropropionic methyl ester in presence of sodium hydroxide and various auxiliary acids in presence of added sodium iodide is shown to be greatly increased. Other iodides specified include magnesium and alkaline earth iodides. Other compounds which may be similarly dehydrohalogenated to the corresponding a -chloroacrylic compounds, include esters of many alcohols, mono- and poly-hydric, with a ,b -dichloropropionic, a ,a -dichloropropionic and mixtures of these acids, nitriles, amides and N-substituted amides. Polymerization inhibitors are preferably included. Specifications 621,219, 618,965 and 704,029 are referred to.
