Abstract
Alkyd resins are made by reacting a glycidyl ester of an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid with an anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid, in the presence, if desired, of up to 3.1 per cent by weight of water based on total reactants. The larger amounts of water give low molecular weight resins suitable as plasticizers. Mono- or poly-epoxides may be included in the reaction. Specified are: glycidyl esters-those of linseed, dehydrated castor, tung, tobacco seed, soya bean, marine animal and oiticica fatty acids; also acrylic, methacrylic, cinnamic and sorbic acids: anhydrides-phthalic, diphenic, naphthalic, succinic, maleic and Diels-Alder adducts of maleic: epoxides-ethylene, propylene and styrene oxides; allyl glycidyl ether, diglycidyl ether, vinyl cyclohexene bis-epoxide and the diglycidyl ether of resorcinol, hydroquine and diphenylol propane. Catalysts for the reaction are potassium hydrogen phthalate, dipotassium phthalate, tertiary amines, e.g. triethylamine and quaternary ammonium bases or their salts, e.g. benzoyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide. The resins may be used as coating compositions with or without a solvent, e.g. xylene or white spirit, as wire enamels, as adhesives, or for use in the production of waterproof paper. Driers may be added. In examples, there are reacted together: (1) the glycidyl ester of linseed fatty acids and phthalic anhydride; (2) the glycidyl ester of linseed fatty acids and phthalic anhydride followed by the addition of propylene oxide and further reaction; (3) the glycidyl ester of linseed fatty acids, the diglycidyl ether diphenylol propane and phthalic anhydride; (4) glycidyl sorbate and phthalic anhydride; (5) glycidyl sorbate and phthalic anhydride, reaction being performed in situ on a metal panel; (6)-(9) the glycidyl ester of linseed or tung oil acids and phthalic anhydride; (10) the glycidyl ester of linseed fatty acids, phthalic anhydride and water.
