Abstract
750,372. Supply systems for welding arcs. LINCOLN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HATTY, W. P. H. June 28, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35276/53. Class 38 (4). To permit the employment of a transformer 1 of relatively low open circuit voltage in an A.C. arc welding system having a choke 7 in the welding circuit 5, 8, the voltage drop across the choke during striking of the arc is reduced by shunting the choke with an impedance (preferably of lower value than that of the choke), such as a tapped reactor 24, under the control of a relay 10, 11 responsive to the voltage drop across the choke. As shown, the relay 10, 11 controls the connection of the reactor to the choke through a D.C. contactor 17, 25 supplied over a rectifier 15 from an auxiliary winding of transformer 1. In operation, when the welding circuit is open, there is no voltage drop across the choke so that relay coil 10 is not energized and its contacts 11, which are normally closed, complete an energizing circuit for contactor coil 17. Contacts 25 are consequently closed and connect the reactor across the choke. On striking an arc, relay 10, 11 is operated by the voltage drop across the choke and contacts 11, 25 consequently open to disconnect the reactor. The contactor 17, 25 is preferably made slow to release.
