Abstract

Nitrogen is produced by introducing ammonia and primary air in a molecular ratio of not less than 4:3 into the top of a preheated nickel catalyst bed in a chamber 1 via inlets 11 and 12, introducing secondary air into the bottom of the bed via inlet 13, and allowing the product gas to pass via a grid 4 and an annular space between the chamber 1 and an outer open top chamber 2 to an exit pipe 14 so as to effect heat exchange with the upper portion of the catalyst bed. The catalyst may be in massive form, e.g. as grannules, sponge, or pellets, or may be supported on a carrier such as pummice, silica, alpha alumina, or Kieselguhr. A wire gauze dome 17 prevents catalyst passing into pipe 13. The temperature at the bottom of the catalyst bed may be controlled by introducing cooled product gas via a pipe 18. A gas burner for initially heating the catalyst bed may be introduced through a pipe 15.
