Abstract
A thin, tough, water-insoluble, water vapour-permeable sheet suitable for use as a surgical dressing is made from a copolymer of at least one member of the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and acrylamide with at least one member of the group consisting of esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with alcohols containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, such as ethyl, n-butyl, n-hexyl, octyl, 2-ethylhexyl and lauryl alcohols, the total acid or amide component constituting 70 to 35 mol. per cent of the copolymer, the total ester component constituting 30 to 65 mol. per cent of the copolymer, and any methacrylic components not constituting more than 40 mol. per cent. The copolymers may be prepared by the following methods (1) by copolymerizing the monomers in solution in methanol in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as a catalyst, and optionally in the presence of a chain terminating agent such as a mercaptan or aldehyde, the copolymer solution produced may be purified by precipitation with a petroleum fraction followed by solution in methanol or ethanol and reprecipitation with water; (2) by partial esterification of polymerized acid; and (3) by partial saponification of an ester polymer.ALSO:A surgical dressing comprising a thin tough sheet is made from a copolymer of at least one member of the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and acrylamide, with at least one member of the group consisting of esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with alcohols containing 2 to 12 carbon atoms, the total acid or amide component constituting 70 to 35 mol per cent of the copolymer, the total ester component constituting 30 to 65 mol per cent of the copolymer, and any methacrylic components not constituting more than 40 mol per cent, the sheet being water-vapour permeable but insoluble in water, so that adhered directly to skin areas surrounding a wound it can be washed with adjacent areas of the skin without undue risk of deterioration, and will protect the wound from contamination but yet allow passage of air and water vapour to and from the area which it covers. The dressings are applied by the treatment of the skin with a solvent for the copolymer. The dressings may be used in combination with antiseptic and bactericidal agents, for example a thin deposit of silver may be applied to the surface of the sheet which is in contact with the wound.
