Abstract

<PICT:0749702/III/1> In a process for extracting oil from cooked material comprising flesh, oil, gluewater and bone particles of whales and other aquatic creatures, which material is sieved in one or more stages to separate liquid constituents for subsequent centrifuging, oil-bearing dust-like bone particles produced in the cooking are separated, before the sieving, from the flesh fibres by agitation and, after the sieving, the mixture of gluewater, oil and bone particles is centrifuged. As shown, the cooked material is fed continuously to a container A, from which it overflows continuously into a settling container C. A gluewater mixture is taken from the middle of container C by a pump D and is returned to container A through nozzles E, whereby a whirling effect is produced in container A and the particles of bone dust are caused to separate from the flesh fibres. The flesh fibres settling in container C are withdrawn by means of a pump F or a worm conveyer or worm press and fed to a coarse rotating or shaking sieve or filter G, from which coarse solids are removed in the direction of the arrow S. A mixture of gluewater, oil and bone dust is withdrawn by a floating extractor H from the surface in container C and is fed partly to a chamber J of the sieve G, in order to wash off the oil adhering to the flesh fibres and to effect a more intensive washing out of the bone particles, and partly to a rotating or shaking sieve or filter K, in order to effect a final screening of the flesh fibres from the mixture of gluewater, oil and bone dust. The remaining flesh fibres are removed from K as indicated by the arrow T. The mixture of gluewater, oil and bone dust passing through the sieves enters a chamber P, from which it is withdrawn and partly fed to a nozzle separator N by a pump L, and partly reintroduced under pressure through a nozzle M into the chamber P to assist in the delivery of bone dust particles to the separator N, in which the mixture is separated into its various components and from which gluewater is returned to the sieves as shown. The oil, flesh and bones may be initially cooked in a rotary cooker and fed to a fat separator, from which the cooked residues are fed to the container A. A mixture of bone dust and gluewater may be taken direct from the container A and fed to the sieves.
