A magnetic separator drum comprises a shuttle-form electromagnet 12 with arcuate poles 16, 17 concentric with a non-magnetic rotatable shell 1, characterised by a partcylindrical pole-shoe 18 joining the two poles on the lower side to provide a longitudinal area of minimum magnetic flux to facilitate removal of the separated material. The drum may be part of a belt conveyer.
