Abstract

749,216. Supply systems for space discharge tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 7, 1954 [April 8, 1953], No. 10236/54. Class 38 (4). In a circuit arrangement for an electric discharge tube 1, e.g. a fluorescent lamp, the circuit being as described in Specification 742,356, there is provided a resistor 7 serially connected with the tube shunting inductance 4 and having such resistance value, thermal capacity, and positive temperature coefficient of resistance as not to influence normal starting and running of the tube but to increase its resistance value sufficiently to limit the current through the inductance 4 to a permissible value when failure of the tube to ignite causes a heavier current to flow through the resistor for a longer period resulting in the resistor attaining a prodetermined higher temperature. The resistor may be of a nickel-base alloy wire wound in heat exchange relation upon a body of glass fibres to retard the heating of the wire.
