Abstract
748,946. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 26, 1953, No. 8393/53. Class 39 (1). A travelling-wave tube 1 is mounted within a focusing magnet assembly comprising a set of coils 19, 20, 21, 22, a pair of ferromagnetic end plates 10, 16 and a number of ferromagnetic tie rods. 18 extending between the end plates and forming a magnetic shield around the solenoids. The tie rods may be replaced by a cylinder of soft iron. The magnet assembly forms with the input and output waveguides 24, 34 a unit into which the tube may be readily inserted and withdrawn. The tube is mounted at the gun end on a plate 14 which is fixed by means of bolts and spacing collars 15 to the magnetic end plate 16. The base of the tube has a flange seating against a shoulder on the plate 14 and is locked in position by clips 43. The collector end of the tube carries a cooling assembly 7 and is insulatingly supported at 9 in the magnetic end plate 10. A cylinder 38 of ferromagnetic material secured to the end plate 16 surrounds the electron gun end of the tube. The electron gun comprises a magnetic cylinder 40 surrounding the cathode and constituting a pole-piece of the magnet assembly. The electron gun is designed as described in Specification 748,945 to give a parallel flow of electrons. The gun may be designed for the electrons to follow the magnetic field lines, the cylinder 38 being omitted. A rearward cylinder may however be provided to collect leakage flux. The arrangement of coils is designed to provide a magnetic field equivalent to that provided by an infinite number of identical equally spaced coils where the distance between coils is less than 0.7 coil diameter. This is stated to produce minimum variation of axial field. In practice the distance apart is less than 0.6 coil diameter and the end coils are wider than the remainder. Coils 20, 21 may be replaced by a single coil or by three coils and the coil 19 by two coils.
