Abstract

Solutions of a macromolecular polyoxymethylene having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.6 measured at 60 DEG C. as an 0.5 per cent solution in p-chlorophenol containing 2 per cent alpha-pinene are made by dissolving the polymer in a phenol, an aralkanol, or a mixture. Solvents mentioned are m-, p-, o-chlorophenol, p-tert. butyl catechol, phenol, trichlorophenol, m-cresol, resorcinol monomethyl ether, 2-bromo-4-tert.-butyl phenol, alpha-methylallylphenol, o-(alpha-phenylethyl) phenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, o-cyclohexylphenol, alpha-naphthol, p-tert - butylphenol, o - hydroxybenzyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, o-hydroxyacetophenone, phenyl methyl and tolyl methyl carbinols and p-hydroxybenzophenone. The macromolecular polyoxymethylene may be made by the methods described in Specifications 742,097, 742,135 744,336 and 748,386. The solutions may be modified by the incorporation of pigments, dyes, plasticizers, resins, waxes, antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors, viscosity stabilizers, acid acceptors such as pinene, or phenoxypropylene oxide, metal deactivators, or fillers. The solutions may be made into fibres, filaments, films, or tapes or used for coating metal, wood, glass, paper, textiles, or wire, or as binders for rock wool, or glass fibres, or as an adhesive.
