Abstract

748,642. Casting-machines and processes. BRENNAN, J. B. March 17, 1952 [May 12, 1951], No. 6848/52. Class 83 (1). A method of casting articles consists in reducing the pressure in a mould cavity below atmospheric pressure, flowing into the cavity molten material which has been degassed by flowing it in a thin stream through a sub-atmospheric zone 6, and moving at least a part of the cavityforming means 15 with the material through a cooling zone 11. Material such as copper is supplied to a graphite mould 1 by a spiral graphite trough 4, the material being heated by high-frequency coils 2, 5. The mould is surrounded by a glass, aluminium-oxide or siliconcarbide easing 8 connected to a negative pressure source 7. The casing 8 may also be connected to a source of inert gas. The material may be supplied in solid form or in liquid form intermittently or continuously. The moulds 15, which are pressed together by atmospheric pressure, are fed through a tube 10. Water-cooled rubber sealing rings are provided between interfitting parts. The moulds may be made as described in Specification 748,643. Vacuum bells may be provided over both ends of the tube 10. Continuous strips of material or tubes may be cast by employing a core such as 30, Figs. 3 and 4, the strips being subsequently rolled, if desired. The moulds may have inserts to produce composite articles. Specifications 734,837 and 735,869 are referred to.
